The Outremer 5X Dream Team gathered in La Grande Motte last week, for a first meeting, just two months after the first launching.
Despite the low wind speed, everybody was keen on sailing immediately. A great opportunity to test everything for real after so many months of worh at the office. The weight is exactly what was calculated, the hours spent on the virtual towing tank made her fantastic and the boat reaches the VPP with no doubt: a mere 7 knots and we are quickly making 9 knots at 100° TWA: magic...
One talks, one compares, one tune, one exchange, one modifies, one takes notes, but everybody looks so happy!
Getting the tiller in your hands is too fun, so you have to wait for your turn. The new steering system makes it even lighter and more precise compares to the initial Outremer 49: you just feel like sailing a Tornado.
But when it's aperitive time, the cockpit easily welcomes the whole crew. Later, an electronics briefing will gather 6 people around the char table: sapce is luxurious.
Sails down, back to the harbour, this day was too short! Thank you very much to the happy (that's what he says) owner for his warm welcome onboard.
Everything you want to know about 5X inside!
Question : Could you introduce you team and your work in a few words ?
Franck Darnet : We are a team of interior architects and designers based in Nantes (West of France), all sailing fans. We invent the style and the inside layout of yachts and production boats (from 40’ to 150’), and more recently style and external design of yachts. We also have an office in Miami.
The studio is now 12 years old. We collaborate with the Outremer Shipyard since the taking over by Grand Large Yachting Group in 2008. We were already the Outremer 49 designers.
Q. What is the job of Franck Darnet Design on a project such as the Outremer 5X?
Franck Darnet : First of all, we designed the inside layout and all living places of the yacht. That includes repartition and shape of spaces. In addition, we invented the inside style: that means the furniture shape and the choice for materials, colours… For this issue, realised in collaboration with Patrick Le Quément, our main concern was always to have an eye on the global original brief and the clients potential expectations for a yacht like her.
Q. How did the collaboration with VPLP, Patrick Le Quément and the Outremer Yachting shipyards work out?
Franck Darnet : It’s a real team work as anyone intervention has an impact on the others. The relationship with the shipyard, VPLP and Patrick Le Quément was exceptional. You know, I was still at the Ecole Boulle (Famous French Design School) when I heard for the first time of the incredible work of Patrick Le Quément for Renault. He is a real star in our domain… It’s a real chance for our team to cooperate with him, and with the legendary VPLP studio! And above all, with a well-established shipyard, who is on the crest. It’s one of the few shipyards to get out in the actual crisis situation. Simply because I think we work with cleverness, in practical and professional way, and last but not least, in a very good atmosphere and with common respect. I definitely think it is the success key for the 5X.
Q. What are the key points, remarkable or innovation, inside the 5X?
Franck Darnet : Considering the Outremer 49 success, we first thought to use the same formula, offering a larger 49’. But, analysing deeply what people really want from a catamaran like this, we moved our design to something more masculine and high-tech. However, we kept all the practical aspects: the cockpit / saloon communication, the view outside while you are standing or seated, in or out…
Q. Let’s let our imaginations take over a bit … if you were lent the Outremer 5X for a year, what would you do?
Franck Darnet : Sailing with such a yacht would be a dream… She is fast, safe, roomy, well-thought… Fifteen years ago, I spent a few months in the Pacific and I really enjoyed this area. Nowdays, the extreme latitudes are appealing me a lot (Patagonia, Spitsbergen…). But I have to say that my family would probably be less enthusiastic!
International Multihull Boat Show: Wednesday April 18 - Sunday April 22nd
Because our catamarans are sailing all around the world with their owners,
Because we build yachts only on orders, under your precise specifications, we don't have stock, therefore we won't have a boat in Lorient.
We will welcome you at the Lorient Multihull Boat Show, like we did in Paris, in the friendly atmosphere of the Grand Large Café.
So come and tel us about your projects. Go far and fast is your philosophy? Come and discover on large screen, the first shots of the Outremer 5X sailing, and the famous Outremer 49. And we have many more ideas and experiences to share. This event will be also the opotunity to see as world premiere, the very first pictures of the new Outremer 45!
But exceptional clients deserve exceptional operation. During the full Boat Show, two Outremer will be in stand-by at La Grande Motte, our home port, ready to welcome you on board:
- the Outremer 5X N°01: new Outremer flagship, the 5X shows exceptional performances while offering more space, more comfort, bearing in mind a design and an aesthetics more seducing than ever.
- the latest Outremer 49, actual shipyard Best Seller successfully completed, in less than 2,5 years, the 2010 European Yacht of the Year, now « Best Boat 2012 » in United States, quickly became a hit among long range cruising fans.
The weather is fine? The plane is waiting for you, and the Grand Large Services Team welcomes you. In Lorient or Montpellier, we look forward to see you!
An exclusive interview from the Outremer 5X architect
Q: How did VPLP like working on the Outremer 5X project?
Marc Van Peteghem: We had been wanting to work with the shipyard for several years. The spirit of the Outremer catamarans and their owners was an inspiration to us all, we feel on the same wavelength. One of the key elements in the specifications – speed – brought us straight home to one of our strongest suits – racing. And the corresponding facet – that of a major journey – was something we can relate to from a personal standpoint. Then, the perspective of working once again with Patrick Le Quément, 10 years after our teamwork with Renault on the Concept Cat, was sheer pleasure.
Q.: How did the collaboration between VPLP, Patrick Le Quément and the Outremer Yachting shipyards work out?
MVP: The design stage was a long and important phase. It was as fascinating as it was crucial. Working from the specs developed by the shipyard, we explored the different values to be expressed by the boat: performance, class, fluidity, contemporary, reassuring … and the aesthetics quite naturally came out of this approach. Designing this boat, we once again clearly saw that naval architecture design is a cohesive approach that is built upon the values inherent to the boat.
Q.: To that point, what are the assets contributed by a firm such as VPLP to such a project?
MVP: I would say experience and tools. With respect to performance for example, we had to find the right balance between good speed and a very safe boat, one that would never create a dangerous situation. This then entails positioning all the cursers we have exactly where they need to be, exactly where we want them. Our multi-hull racing experience is an unrivalled asset here. The tools developed for racing are put to work here with the slightly different objective of proficient cruising. They provide for highly accurate monitoring of all the parameters, in particular the crucial spec of weight, which was perfectly complied with thanks to both outstanding collaboration with the yard and our own extremely painstaking work.
Q.: And for you, what are the real highlights of the Outremer 5X project?
MVP: First of all, thanks to the low outfitting density there is a very interesting length/mass ratio which gives rise to incomparable performances and highly reassuring seagoing qualities.
The proportions are lovely. The Outremer 5X is long for the weight, or light for her size, depending on how you want to look at it. Front beam and mast farther aft, long bows, ensure excellent seaworthiness and good reactivity even in light breezes.
Next I would say that the aesthetics are particularly successful. The form that Patrick Le Quément gave to the hull gives rise to a feeling of power and asserts a strong personality. The roof gives it the Outremer family resemblance yet has slightly changed, becoming more refined. Actually, I am rather proud of this boat if I do say so myself! (laughs)
Q. Let’s let our imaginations take over a bit … if you were lent the Outremer 5X for a year, what would you do?
MVP: I’d begin with a trip around the Mediterranean, taking advantage of the crossing speeds to spend a lot of time on land. I would love to explore the cultural diversity there is to be seen. Then I would really like to go back to the Pacific. And then, taking a slight detour, I would sail to Indonesia!
Today, in front of La Grande Motte, our new flagship had her first sea trial: promising...
TWS around 10 knots, Mainsail and Jib, then Gennaker, no pecial effort, but SOG is allready 14 knots: promising...

Outremer 5X: it's a dream's story.
By polar temperature but under a magnificent sunshine, the Outremer 5X touched the water for the first time this morning. What a day for the conceptors, the builders and, of course, the owner. The beginning of a nice and long story on every seas
Followed live by many impatient sailors on twitter, the operations ran perfectly well. Perfectly on line with the scheduled weight, with her incredebly nice rotating mast, she is as sporty as reassuring.
You may live the best moments of this memorable day, thanks to the very nice pictures by Gilles Foucras:

Outremer Yachting will attend to the 2012 Atlantic coast edition of the International Multihull Fair. This boat Show will take place on the Esplanade de la Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly in Lorient during 5 days from April 18 - 22.
It is a special and unique event in that it alternates between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
Since the first edition in 2010, it has more than justified its international status, becoming the unmissable multihull meeting place.
The Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly is a significantly appropriate venue. With the support of our private and business partners, it contributes to the success of the Show, which this year takes place alongside other international events.
You can be certain that everyone will be present at Lorient 2012.
See you there between the 18 and 22 April!
From 16th to 20th february, Outremer Yachting will attend the Miami Boat Show.
An Outremer 49 will be presented during this fair, come to visit us!
The American Sail Magazine just announce its "Best Boats" 2012. The Outremer 49 is elected "Best Boat 2012" in its category "Deck and Cockpit Layout"!
After the reward of "European Yacht of the ear 2010" title, this honour strengthens the international recognition which Outremer 49 enjoys. This recognition by professionals is combined with a true success for customers around the world; in fact more than 20 yachts have already been sold in more than 10 countries!
Here are the key points identified by the journalists after the sea trial during several days:
The deck layout:"After a few hundred miles sailing this boat we found nothing about its deck layout we wanted to change", "One or two crew can manage the boat easily "
Tillers: "Our favorite features were the three different stations - tillers outboard on each hull (each with a comfy steering seat), plus a conventional bulkhead-mounted wheel" "It truly is an ideal arrangement".

For this 51st edition of the "autic", Allures Yachting, Garcia Yachting and Outremer Yachting shipyards get together under the banner of the Grand Large Yachting stand, the hub of blue water sailing.
Various animations will be proposed on our stand (Hall 1 - G 40) during the show.
First, the famous sailor and writer Jimmy Cornell will sign copies of his new book 'The Cornell's Ocean Atlas' on Saturday 3 December between 16:00 and 18:00 on our stand. We expect many of you will want to come to this signing session and ask pertinent questions to Jimmy Cornell.
Also, on the occasion of the Owner's evening, we will have the pleasure of welcoming the navigator Sébastien Roubinet who will tell us all about his extraordinary adventure when sailing the northwest passage and his attempt to cross the Arctic Ocean on his catamaran Babouche!
A boatshow is also of course the best opportunity to visit the exhibitor's yachts. This year, we are putting on show a 2-cabin and technical space version of our Allures 45, ready to take to sea fully equiped for long distance cruising and diving.
Out of respect for the owners who are kind enough to lend their yachts for the show, the number of people allowed on board will be limited. This may cause visitors to have to wait occasionally. That's why we invite you to make an appointment in order to get the best service without queuing. We thank you in advance.

Outremer Yachting will also be present during the Dusseldorf Boat Show (21st to 29th January 2012, Hall 15 stand A25).
Jimmy Cornell, the long distance voyager and author of many books concerning long distance cruising, publishes a new atlas of Pilot-Charts.
The Pilot-charts are charts and maps indicating the wind conditions and ocean currentslikely towards given direction, on monthly basis. Traditionally, the pilot charts are based on data compiled from more than 100 years.
The accelerated climate changes from the latter years have provided these imprecise information and sometimes even erroneous.
After having the most relevant possible forecasts, Jimmy Cornell has used the weather data gathered by a meteorological satellite network over the last twenty years.
It results in a precise and exhaustive collection of new pilot charts, representing more conditions than the sailor meets today while navigating.
Directly excited with this approach, the Grand Large Yachting group is proud of being able to support this project.
Jimmy Cornell shall sign the first copies in France for the Nautic fair, at the Voiles&Voiliers booth, as well as in our booth on Saturday, 3rd December from 4PM to 6PM.
After the spectacular removal of the mould of the Outremer 5X deck, the bridging has been carried out this week. Now, the volume and organisation of this exceptional unit can be seen.
The Yacht shall be launched at the end of January and the first sea trials will be at the beginning of March.
Meanwhile, the visitors of of the Grand Large Yachting stand iat the Nautic Fair shall have the oppotunity to discover the pictures of the new Outremer 5X!
For always accompanying you at the best in your voyages and along primary sea routes, Grand Large extends its network of service points with a new point in New Caledonia and another in Fidji islands. Our old continent faces the strongest winter since 1987, but we received these pictures from Alidade, Outremer 49 number 1. They left Barcelona, just after the show, late November. The happy owners family on board, enjoys now the nice Grenada Islands sun shine. After calling in Gibraltar, Canarias Islands, and Cape Verde, they crossed the Atlantic in ten days, in perfect osmosis with the elements and their cat. Today in the Grenada islands, they enjoy the fantastic speed potential of their Outremer 49, to cross from one island to another between 12 and 14 knots, having more time to discover the hinterland. They should be back home in Cherbourg by the summer, but we shouldn't anticipate too much as there is still so much to discover...

On Saturday January 23rd, day one of the Düsseldorf Boat Show, it was time to know the results for the European Yacht of the Year Awards. Gathered by the German Sailing Magazine 'Yacht', 11 journalists, coming from all over Europe, tested in November the nominated yachts, and elected the Outremer 49 as the European Yacht of the Year 2010! Just two years after the gathering with Allures Yachting, and when at the same time the Hull N°1 was arriving on the other side of the Atlantic sailing the last days at 12 knts in average per day, it's a fantastic reward for all the work accomplished to make the fantastic Outremer concept going ahead again. Many thanks to all who worked hard on this project: conceptors (Barreau - Neuman architects, The Franck Darnet Design team, and the Outremer Yachting Design Strudio), the production staff who worked hard this summer to deliver in time a beautiful boat, and last, but not least, all the owners who chose the Outremer 49 to accomplish their dream! PS: please note that you may now follow the Outremer Yachting news live on Twitter.

Under a bright sunshine, over a hundred guests attended Saturday 24th October, the new Outremer 49 baptism ceremony. A few days before their departure for a round Atlantic trip, the owners of 'Alidade' saw with relief, famous skipper Kito de Pavant, breaking the traditional Champagne bottle on his first attempt! God bless 'Alidade' and her crew, and as quoted by Xavier Desmarest - Outremer Yachting CEO, you have just one duty: "Let us dream!"

Not yet launched but allready honored! Before her first show in Cannes(9-14 Sept.), our new catamaran is selected among the finalists for the prestigious European Yacht of the Year Award in the "Multihulls' Category. This means, according to Jochen Rieker, YACHT Magazine Editor and Election coordinator, that "she has been ranked as one of the most interesting and promising newcomers of her class." The judges, made up from 11 yachting magazines across Europe, will test the nominated boats in September in Ijmuiden (NL) or in November in Barcelona (SP). This is the 7th edition of the award, and the winner will be announced at the Düsseldorf boat show in January 2010.

Outremer Yachting and Allures Yachting shipyards organized jointly in Paris on the 18th of July the first seminar dedicated to preparation for a sea voyage. About twenty Outremer and Allures owners, all expecting to leave within the next 12 months, received precious advices from Jimmy Cornell and Geoffroy de Bouillane. Jimmy Cornell, with 3 round the world trips on every seas, is the reference author for sailors with best sellers such as 'World Cruising Routes' or 'World Cruising Handbook' Geoffroy de Bouillane reported in his book "Un temps pour un rêve’’, his exeprience about one sabbatical year with his family across the Atlantic on an Outremer 45. They answered participants questions on many subjects such as: route planning, practical aspects of life onboard, administration procedures, teaching children... Both sailors shared their exeprience, including their initial fears and the magic moments they lived afterwards; travelogue widely illustrated with photos and anecdotes, made everybody feelling the fresh breeze of ocean going trips! Owners crossed their opinions and debated largely on the many questions that always appear when the D-Day for leaving comes. As participants where delighted with this first experience, more seminars will be organised on various subjects, but still within the "long distance cruising pole" created by the matching of Outremer and Allures.

Outremer 45 'Obedient' won the 2009 Scottish Islands Peaks Race. What a chance for the crew to participate this incredible race in this wonderful country. And for us to read the full report from her owner:
"We are delighted to be able to inform you that “Obedient”, an Outremer 45, won the 2009 Scottish Islands Peaks Race starting on 15 May 2009. This race involves both sailing and hill running around the Inner Hebrides. A description of the race is available at http://www.sipr.zetnet.co.uk/intro.htm . The race is for teams of hill runners and sailors over a long weekend around the beautiful West Coast of Scotland. The sailing course of 160 nautical miles includes the strong tides and overfalls of the Corryvreckan and the Mull of Kintyre whilst the runners cover 60 miles and 11,500 ft of climbing.
"Obedient", despite being a cruiser, was in class one, and beat an F 28 trimaran over the first two legs, even winning a tacking duel with the trimaran through the night in very light winds. Unfortunately the conditions off the Mull of Kintyre were very severe, and the F 28 got caught in very bad tidal overfalls, and retired on the third of four sailing legs. Despite the race being mainly upwind, sailing times were better than a J124, an X412, a J 44 and a Maramu 52. The overall sailing time was 22 hours 47 minutes and six seconds which was quicker than a very well sailed J124; however we sailed very conservatively after the trimaran retired, avoiding breakages in the heavy conditions, as our overall lead was over four hours. Total race time was less than the magical 36 hours overall, at 35h: 48m: 25 seconds, compared to the second placed boat which took 40h:2m:30s. This is an average of 7kts, which includes the time taken for the runners to leave the checkout, get picked up by dinghy and set off, as well as dropping them off the dinghy and rowing ashore to the checkpoint at each of the mountains as well as Oban and Troon.
This is the second fastest time ever in the history of the race. That was achieved by a Nic Bailey designed 40 foot ocean racing trimaran (Mollymawk ex. MTC) in mainly reaching conditions.
Of 48 starters, only 15 finished because of poor weather conditions. This result is a tribute to the speed and seakeeping qualities of Outremer catamarans, and to their comfort in which we were able to keep the runners well fed, rested while on board and (in the main) free of seasickness. Tribute also to the runners, Donald and Ray, who came second in the runners. Ray had only had one week's notice to participate in the race.
The moral of the story – if you want a fast cruise round the West Coast of Scotland in incredible speed, comfort, style and safety, buy an Outremer!
Thanks Outremer! Please thank all of your staff who helped build our wonderful catamaran..
Gordon"

Building of the first Outremer 49 went through an important step with the infusion of hulls and bridge deck. Lamination of sandwich bulkheads started immediately and gives now the main shape of what we can forecast with the first sales as the future 'must have' for blue water cruising.
Development and production are strictly on line with the planning, and we are impatient to show you our new flagship at the next Cannes Boatshow (9-14 September 2009).
